Blue Monday is finally behind us and although it may not feel like it, we are halfway through January…Horray! It’s time to look on the positive side- the warmer weather and lighter evenings will be here before we know it.  So whether you’ve fallen off the New Year diet already, or if you are promising yourself that you will start it tomorrow,  then we’ve put together a tasty selection of Low-Fat substitutions that will treat your taste buds either way.

Low-Fat Cakes

Applesauce

A staple cupboard item that never gets used enough is Applesauce. Try using Applesauce when next baking for a low-fat alternative to sugar or fat. Top Tip: you might have to reduce the amount of liquid when using Applesauce to avoid a too watery consistency.

Bananas

Just one cup of mashed bananas works perfectly as a substitute for one cup of butter or oil. Top Tip: the riper the bananas, the sweeter the taste.

Prunes

A low-fat fruit that isn’t on everyone’s favourite list but is bursting with health benefits is Prunes. Combine 1/4 cup pureed prunes with 1/4 cup boiling water to make the perfect substitute for butter. Bursting with fibre goodness and honestly, it tastes delicious! Top Tip: If you don’t have the time to puree the prunes, just but the pre-made baby pouches already pureed!

Avocado

The perfect substitute for butter. Although this fruit is high in fat, avocados contain heart-healthy monounsaturated fat which can help lower bad cholesterol and help decrease tummy fat. So it’s a good fruit to have in our diet! Top Tip: Substitute half the amount of butter in your recipe for mashed avocado.
